Reproduction rights: A new generation of rights?

The notion of reproduction and sexual rights arises from the synthesis of international movements promoting human rights, population and development, and particularly women's rights. This implies access to all forms of contraception and to good quality health services, as well as the freedom for women to make their own decisions, independently of the state, their companion or their family. This definition was ratified in Cairo in 1994 and again in Beijing in 1995. Reproduction rights represent a fourth generation of rights, following civil, political and social rights. These rights cannot be perceived as neutral, because they are defined per se by their report with rights enjoyed by men, nor are they merely women's rights, but, in a very real sense, they represent universal rights.
