Women and emigration in the contemporary history of Galicia (1880-1930) [Mulleres e emigración na historia contemporánea de Galicia, 1880-1930].

In the introduction, this paper analyses the lack of research that deals with the implications of women in the migratory phenomenon in Galicia and their degree of participation in the same. It explains why the study was conceived as the first contribution, on the author's part, to fill-ing in this significant gap once the precise methodological and analytical instruments were found. The paper is then structured in two parts, the first bearing the most weight, where an analysis is made on how male emigration increased the number of duties women were already fulfill-ing in the family household. In the second part, an approach is made towards the characteris-tics that lead to the incorporation of Galician women in migratory flows, outlining a clearly progressive tendency.

Emigration from the area of La Rioja to America (1880-1936) [A emigración rioxana a América, 1880-1936].

This work is centred on the departure of inhabitants of La Rioja overseas during the height of contemporary emigration to America. The intensity, duration and general characteristics of these migratory flows are analysed using different documentary sources. It also contains a detailed analysis on the causes and consequences of the aforesaid, making special mention of the depressed areas of the sierra.

Oral recollection and ethnical identity of Spanish immigrants to Latin America in the 20th century: Galicians in Brazil, 1880-1970 [Memoria oral e identidade étnica da inmigración española a Latinoamérica no século XX: os galegos en Brasil, 1880-1970].

This paper analyses the possibilities provided by personal documents in order to study the economic, social and cultural transformations which have arisen as a result of the migratory phenomenon in Galicia at two levels: in the changing rural society from which the emigrants departed and to which they went back as returned "americanos", and in the Latin American societies of destination. Our aim is to demonstrate, empirically, that oral narrative (as a latter construction of an experienced past) and personal correspondence (as a representation of the undergone present) can give a qualitative perspective on a micro level which complements classical migratory studies, based on conventional macrostatistical documentation, on a com-pared perspective.

The impact of the independist process on matrimonial behaviour of Spaniards in Córdoba [Impacto do proceso independentista nos comportamentos matrimoniais de españois en Córdoba].

The objective of this paper is to contribute elements that help us to understand the effects of the emancipatory process in matrimonial traits in Spaniards residing in Córdoba (Argentina), brought about by the application of the "Decreto sobre matrimonios de españoles con jóvenes américanas" (Act on marriage between Spaniards and young American women), sanctioned by the Supreme Director of the Nation, Juan Martín de Pueyrredón, in 1817. Based on con-sulted sources, an analysis is made of the appraisal given by Córdoban society in relation to the aforementioned marriages at the height of the Revolution, and which were the main char-acteristics of this period.

Feminine immigration in Cuba: A century behind [Inmigración feminina en Cuba: un sé-culo atrás].

The situation of immigrants and, fundamentally, their active working mass, constitutes one of the themes least studied by Cuban historiography. Thanks to a deep analysis and from the gender perspective of the population Census taken in 1899 it is possible to discover interest-ing facts about the effects of the post-war on the island's occupational structure and its reflec-tion on native and foreign women workers.

Some socio-demographic characteristics of Hispanic Cubans in Mexico during the "Porfi-riato" [Algunhas características sociodemográficas dos inmigrantes hispanocubanos en México durante o Porfiriato].

During the Cuban wars of independence there was great emigration from the island, part of which reached Mexico where many were registered in the Naturalisation Papers in the Paro-chial Archive of Veracruz. In general they deal with immigration that was favourable to Mex-ico in human resource terms for a good part of the immigrants were young and there was a greater proportion of men to women, among which the presence of important human capital and people with their own wealth can be seen.

German migration to Latin America [A emigración alemana a América Latina].

This work attempts to give a general approach to the phenomenon of German emigration to Latin America, analysing the causes, objectives and stages that this phenomenon went through from the second half of the 19th century. It is worth noting the emphasis that the au-thor places upon the political repercussion that this emigration had on certain countries, high-lighting the German origin of some notable figures such as the former Paraguayan dictator Alfredo Stroessner. A comparative analysis of German emigration according to the destina-tion country makes it possible to appreciate its evolution with sufficient clarity.

American emigration and return in "A Mariña" in Lugo: The Council of Cervo (1900-1930) [Emigración americana e retorno na Mariña luguesa: o concello de Cervo (1900-1930)].

The main aim of this article is to present the migratory behaviour of an area less studied by Galician historiography, as is the case of A Mariña in Lugo and, within this area, the council of Cervo. Sources used have been the municipal roll and emigrant identity cards, comple-mented by oral sources and a series of periodical publications. Two very distinct parts can be distinguished: the first makes reference to the typology of the Cervo emigrant by means of a quantitative evaluation (classification by sex, marital status, age, degree of kinship, and pro-fession) also bearing the destination countries in mind, among which Argentina stands out for being almost unanimous. The second part centres on the role played by local Spanish-Americans and the destination of American returnees, always present in the area under study, although the rate of return was always low.

The Spanish migratory contribution to the Antilles between 1765-1824 [A contribución migratoria española ás Antillas entre 1765 e 1824].

This work analyses the migratory flow between Spain and America at the end of the 18th cen-tury and beginning of the 19th century. Here, by using embarkation licences from the Indies General Archive as the basis, exhaustive study is made of the movement of Spaniards with regard to the demographic variables by sex, age, marital status, profession, place of birth, des-tination and reasons for travelling, in order to draw conclusions such as the greater migratory flow to the Caribbean, and above all to Cuba from 1810 onwards, once the struggles for inde-pendence had begun in the rest of the continent.
