The present article deals with changes in the concept of urban population over time and space. In the first section, the author makes a quick review of the usual definitions of urban population, beginning with those in the smallest territorial units of various countries; she raises the problems created by the diversity of definitions available and describes the Eurostat harmonisation project. She then prepares an inventory of the laws on which the definitions of towns in Hungary have been made over the past century. In the second part of the article, she develops the concept of historical urban centre, the morphological definition of the urban area, the functions of a city and those of the manpower pockets. Most demographic statistical series only include positive numbers and each of these series can, therefore, be reproduced in the following manner: one of the numbers is chosen as the basic number and all the other figures are expressed as powers of the basic number, using their respective natural logarithms. The author describes the various kinds of mathematical functions which can easily be adjusted to series of this kind and evaluates their degree of efficiency. This indirect modelling procedure is applied to Hungarian data from 1993 on the overall fertility rates and age-specific marital fertility rates and on life table parameters. The author compares these results with those using other direct and indirect modelling procedures used in the field of demography.
