Progress in Australian Demography (p. 1-8)

In marking the tenth anniversary of the Journal of the Australian Population Association, this paper focuses especially on the eaching of demography in Australia at graduate and undergraduate levels. The paper also discusses the contribution of universities and other research organizations to the development of demography in Australia. (AUSTRALIA, DEMOGRAPHY TEACHING, DEMOGRAPHIC RESEARCH)

New Challenges for Demography (p. 9-20)

Challenges for demography have arisen from recognition of its potential contribution to interdisciplinary research in new areas of major public interest. This paper discusses three of these: research on anthropological demography, AIDS and the health transition. The paper examines priorities and the contribution of demography to progress in each area. (DEMOGRAPHIC RESEARCH)

Progress in Demographic Methodology (p. 21-32)

This paper examines developments in demographic methodology during the past decade or so. It focuses on methodological advances in the analysis of mortality of infants and young children, of adult, and on problems of mortality estimation in small populations. The other major areas reviewed here are related to the study of birth intervals, parity progression, proximate determinants of fertility, and the demography of the family. Concluding remarks relate the methodological issues to the information explosion in demography. (DEMOGRAPHIC RESEARCH, METHODOLOGY)

Australian Demography at the Millennium (p. 33-54)

This paper looks backwards over the last ten years to see what topics might concern Australian demographers in the future. The possibility of convergence or "sameness" is considered, but not proven. The main areas considered are historical demography, mortality, fertility, marriage, fertility regulation, internal migration, international migration, human resources, ageing, forecasting, the family life cycle, policy, and gender. Australia's Population Growth, Composition and Distribution: Emerging Research Needs (p. 55-82)

In 1993 the charter of the Bureau of Immigration Research (BIR) was widened to encompass other areas of population and its name changed to the Bureau of Immigration and Population Research (BIPR). The paper argues that for too long population policy and policy-related research in Australia has been synonymous with immigration policy and research and that this change presents an opportunity to redress this imbalance and broaden the range of areas across which government and private sector activity in Australia can be assisted through knowledge of population dynamics. It is essential, however, that the BIPR broaden the scope of its activity and the present paper presents a research agenda which encompasses a range of population issues of relevance to contemporary private and public sector activity.
